The Great Debate: NCERT or Reference Books?
One of the most common questions from CBSE students and parents is: "Is NCERT enough, or do we need reference books?" The answer depends on your goal — whether you're aiming for board exam success, competitive exam preparation, or both. Let's break it down.
Why NCERT Books Are Non-Negotiable
NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) books are the official textbooks prescribed by CBSE. Here's why they must be your foundation:
- Board Exam Questions: 70-80% of CBSE board exam questions are directly from NCERT.
- Competitive Exams: JEE Main and NEET heavily rely on NCERT concepts, especially in Chemistry and Biology.
- Clear Language: NCERT books are written in simple, easy-to-understand language.
- Affordable: NCERT books are among the most affordable textbooks available.
When Do You Need Reference Books?
Reference books become important when:
- You want extra practice beyond NCERT exercises.
- You're preparing for competitive exams like JEE or NEET alongside boards.
- You need more detailed explanations for difficult topics.
- You want topic-wise MCQ practice for entrance exams.
Subject-Wise Recommendation
Mathematics
NCERT first, then R.D. Sharma or R.S. Aggarwal. NCERT is sufficient for boards; R.D. Sharma is essential for JEE aspirants.
Physics
NCERT + H.C. Verma for JEE aspirants. For board-only students, NCERT with Lakhmir Singh is enough.
Chemistry
NCERT is king. For JEE/NEET, add O.P. Tandon (Organic) and P. Bahadur (Physical).
Biology
NCERT is everything for NEET. Trueman's Biology is a great supplement for deeper understanding.
Our Recommendation
Master NCERT first — read it thoroughly, solve all exercises, and understand every concept. Only then move to reference books for additional practice. Don't spread yourself too thin with too many books.
